The .AI domain extension has exploded in popularity, reflecting the growing importance of artificial intelligence across industries. As of October 1, 2024, the total number of .AI domains surpassed 533,000, marking a significant milestone for the domain space, which has experienced rapid growth over the past several years.

Back in July 2018, there were just 48,272 .AI domains registered. By the start of 2019, this number had increased to 62,183, showing early signs of the extension’s rising prominence. Growth continued steadily, with 85,596 domains registered by the end of 2020.

However, the pace of registrations really picked up in 2021 and 2022. By July 1, 2021, there were 123,651 .AI domains, growing to 143,737 by mid-2022. The real explosion came in the following year. Between June 2023 and September 2023, .AI domains jumped from 248,609 to 306,861 — an increase of nearly 60,000 domains in just three months.

As of December 2023, the total hit 353,928, but 2024 brought the most dramatic rise yet. By April 2024, registrations had climbed to 425,060, followed by 478,696 by mid-2024. Finally, as of October 1, 2024, the total reached a staggering 533,068.

This impressive growth highlights the increasing demand for AI-related domains, with businesses, startups, and tech professionals eager to secure a digital footprint in the booming AI sector. The trajectory suggests that .AI will continue to grow as artificial intelligence becomes even more integrated into everyday life.
