10 new gTLDs including .supersport, .mnet, receive ICANN termination notice

ICANN intends to terminate the Registry Agreement of South Africa’s Naspers, and its pay-television subsidiary MultiChoice, thus the applicant may soon lose the brand generic top-level domains applied for in 2012. According to information available on the ICANN website, termination notices regarding 10 TLDs owned by Naspers and MultiChoice, the pay-TV operator that owns DStv, M-Net and SuperSport have been sent to the applicant.

The top-level domains facing termination include .naspers, .payu, .supersport, .mzansimagic, .mnet, .kyknet, .africamagic, .multichoice, .dstv and .gotv.

The 10 brand domain names in the termination list are .naspers, .payu, .supersport, .mzansimagic, .mnet, .kyknet, .africamagic, .multichoice, .dstv and .gotv.

ICANN had warned new top level domain name applicants whose contracts have been signed to move to the delegation phase where one .brand new gTLD applicant Emerson Electric Co (NYSE:EMR) already terminated its new TLD ambitions.

One of the letters reads:

“…ICANN provided you an additional 30 days to complete the testing and procedures necessary to delegate the TLD; however, as of the date of this letter, that extended period has lapsed and the Registry Operator has not successfully completed the steps necessary for the TLD to be delegated into the root zone.”

Termination Process

Under the New gTLD Registry Agreement, either party may terminate pursuant to certain requirements in the Registry Agreement, including but not limited to the following:

  • Section 4.3 and its subsections – Termination by ICANN
  • Section 4.4 and its subsections – Termination by Registry Operator

Pursuant to the above sections, in the event of termination by either party and after consultation with Registry Operator, ICANN shall determine (“Preliminary Determination”) whether or not to transition operation of the Registry to a successor registry operator in its sole discretion and in conformance with the Registry Transition Process.
